Nikolaos Chalikiopoulos Mantzaros"
Presentation of a
collective volume
The Music Studies Department
of the Ionian University presents the collective work "Nikolaos
Chalikiopoulos Mantzaros. A contribution of research of the 130 years since
the composer's passing away" at the Book Gallery of Athens. With this
book, the Music Studies Department of the Ionian University inaugurates a
series of scientific publications, through which its research studies will
be presented.
The volume includes
the revised lectures given by the participants in the Scientific Meeting entitled
"Unknown Mantzaros" that took place on December 7, 2002 at the Athens Concert
Hall. More specifically, it includes the speeches of: Yiorgos Leotsakos,
Konstantinos D. Kakavelakis, Irmgard Lerch-Kalavrytinou, Kostas Kardamis,
Dimitris Brovas, Pavlos Ventouras and Haris Xanthoudakis.
It also includes the text of an older lecture by Costas Zervopoulos,
as well as four appendixes with new published or rare documents on the composer's
work: the article of Domenicos Padovas about Mantzaros (1872), unpublished
manuscripts on Mantzaros' works and the efforts of publishing them, the rare
Spyridon De Viazis' biographical study (1889) and extracts from Mantzaros'
texts and notes on the theory of "The Unity Law".
The researchers and the documents highlight unknown aspects of the life,
the work and the views of the musician and philosopher Mantzaros. They create
a new basis for study, reform and publishing of Mantzaros's work. This volume
is the first scientific book ever written about the man who composed Greece's
National Anthem .
